“There is one thing that cannot be legislated: common sense, integrity, and probity” - by Rogério Alves

Rogerio Alves, Managing Partner from RA, was interviewed by Luís Rosa and Filipe Amorim for the June 12 edition of the program “Blind Justice”, on Rádio Observador.

Of the various issues addressed, the one that is on the agenda stands out: the Government's proposal to amend the Statute and the law on lawyers' own acts.

According to Rogério Alves, the Bar Association is, above all, the great defender of the prerogatives of a free, independent, fearless and, therefore, non-dependent law firm.

The destruction of self-regulation is absurd, even if it appears in the guise of a modern, democratic and competitive measure. People must be prepared to practice law and must be regulated by those who understand law.

For this reason, Rogério Alves reaffirmed that he will be in solidarity with the Bar Association in resisting and in the political fight against these measures and in trying to explain to people that, under the cover of very modern, innovative measures and measures to encourage competition, the quality of the profession is being degraded, leading to lack of control, disaccountability and potential harm to the rights of citizens.

The RA partner also states that this essential solidarity expressed with the Bar Association and free and independent law, at the service of individuals and their rights, does not prevent him from disagreeing with some of the measures approved at the general meeting, especially those that may affect the functioning of the courts, or, in any way, harm people in need of justice.

These measures induce the Order to behave like a union, which it is not, nor should it, under any circumstances, become.
